In 1967 Melbourne entrepreneur Ross Shelmerdine commissioned wine industry expert Colin Preece to find the best site for premium wine grape growing in South Eastern Australia. Preece chose a former grazing estate in the Nagambie district for its temperate climate, soil and proximity to the waterways.
Over its 40 year history, Mitchelton has developed a strong pedigree in producing superb Estate and Central Victorian regional wines specializing in Shiraz, Riesling and Rhone blends. Winemaker Travis Clydesdale and Viticulturist John Beresford work together and in harmony with the land to hone the vineyards of Mitchelton. Combining years of hands-on experience and an intimate understanding of the estate, the Mitchelton philosophy is to harness the vineyard’s potential by unlocking the best from individual blocks through innovation, and interaction with the soil. This approach yields extraordinary results, producing wines of distinct personality, finesse and longevity.
Under the new ownership of the Ryan Family an exciting new era is unfolding in re-establishing Mitchelton as one of Australia’s premier winery destinations.
